A Bahamian and nine foreigners have been denied bail on charges of marijuana possession with intent to supply. Bahamian Shawn Saunders Bruey, along with Muammer Durmus, Luciano Guzman, Omar Garcia, Oscar Gonza, and Mauricio Comacho, all of Bolivia; Mehmefsalih Akagundluz of Turkey and Patty Cruz of Brazil, are accused of conspiracy to possess drugs with intent to supply and marijuana possession with intent to supply.

The defendants denied the accusations during an arraignment before Magistrate Carolita Bethell yesterday. Prosecutors alleged that police found 10 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $10,000, during a search of a home in Lucaya on January 30

The accused have been remanded into custody, as amendments to the Bail Act have removed the discretion of the lower courts to grant bail for the offenses. The defendants return to court on July 13 for the start of their trial. Attorneys Michael Kemp and Devard Francis appeared for the accused.
