Street vendors on the rise amid recession

By DENISE MAYCOCK Tribune Freeport Reporter dmaycock@tribunemedia.net FREEPORT - There has been a significant increase in the number of street vendors and peddlers in recent months on Grand Bahama, where jobs are still scarce and the economy is in recession. At almost every street corner persons are hustling to sell anything from phones cards to peanuts, water, fruit juices, and newspapers to passing motorists. For some, this is the only way they can pay the bills and feed their families, especially in these tough times when unemployment is high here on the island.
