Man Becomes First Murder Vctim for 2012

A father who was stabbed at his doorstep while his four young children were inside his home, died in hospital on Monday, becoming the year's first homicide victim.  Yesterday police said the details of the killing were sketchy, but preliminary information suggested the victim was at his home on St. Michael's Road, off of Prince Charles Drive, on Sunday night when an altercation with a visitor occurred.

Police suspect that the victim, whose identity they did not release, greeted his assailant who then attacked him in his home's entryway, while the four young children were inside.  The wounded victim, who police said is in his early 30s, staggered to a neighbor's house for help.  Police were called to the scene at 11:25 p.m. on Sunday, however when responding officers arrived they found the victim unconscious.

He was taken to hospital and rushed into surgery but died a few hours later, police said.  "He was at home; someone went to the house and we don't know exactly what took place when he answered the door, but whatever took place took place at the front door to his residence," said head of the Central Detective Unit Superintendent Paul Rolle.

"He ran to a neighbor's house to get some help and they contacted the police and ambulance.  He was transported to hospital and he died sometime later, about two hours or so later," Rolle added.  Rolle said police were not able to get much information out of the victim before he died.
"He gave us some information but whatever he said was vague.  By the time the officers got there he was unconscious.  He was transported to the hospital and they would have taken him into surgery and we didn't get a chance to speak to him (in-depth)."

Police are also questioning three men in connection to the homicide of Keith Lightbourne.
Lightbourne, the 127th murder victim of 2011, was shot dead shortly before 1 p.m. on Fire Trail Road on December 30.  Police said he was walking when three men inside a Honda Accord pulled alongside him.  Two of the men jumped out of the car and one of the suspects - who was armed with a handgun - opened fire on the 27-year-old.

Lightbourne was shot to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The Carmichael Road resident was the fifth person killed within a week.  Police yesterday appealed for anyone with information on these killings to contact them at 919, 322-3333, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991, 502-9910 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous hotline at 328-TIPS.
