Injured Inmate Could Get Bail

A judge said he would consider granting bail to an armed robbery suspect if he does not get needed surgery. Kermit Evans, also known as Amos Evans, is charged with eight counts of armed robbery and three counts of possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger the lives of three policemen.

The charges arose from the September 1 armed robbery of Island Luck at Carmichael Road. Evans appeared before Senior Supreme Court Justice Jon Isaacs on a bail application. However, the hearing was delayed because his lawyer, Geoffrey Farquharson, was not present and he had not filed affidavits in support of the application. Evans told the court that his hand was broken in two places and prison officials had failed to ensure that he got an operation to mend his arm.

Kevin Farrington, the prosecutor, said he would make inquiries to check the validity of Evans' claims. Isaacs put him on notice that he would grant bail if the court was satisfied that Evans was not getting the required care in prison. He said, "The court will admit him to bail so he can make his own way to hospital." The bail hearing has been adjourned to December 27.
