(BIS Photo/Gladstone Thurston) LONG ISLAND, Bahamas -- Agriculture and Marine Resources Minister Lawrence S 'Larry' Cartwright commissioned a tractor and farm equipment for Long Island farmers last Friday.
They will provide "meaningful assistance" to farmers and facilitate mechanised cultivation, said Mr Cartwright.
They should increase the rate of land preparation, reduce the cost of production, promote better quality crops, and assist with pasture establishment, maintenance, and fencing for livestock, he said.
Director of Agriculture Simeon Pinder and extension officer Maurice Minnis gave farmers a crash course in drip irrigation techniques.
Long Island, represented by Minister Cartwright, is the third island provided with reliable farm tractor and equipment.
"It demonstrates my ministry's commitment to repositioning agriculture in this global climate, as a sustainable source of food security," he said.
