Quarter-miler Ramon Miller picked a good time to run a season's best in the open men's 400 meters (m). After failing to make the final at the 13th International Association of Athletic Federations' (IAAF) World Championships this year, Miller came storming back to end his 2011 season with a bang.
His time of 45.01 seconds, turned in yesterday, gave him the bronze medal at the 16th Pan American Games currently being held in Guadalajara, Mexico. This is the first medal for The Bahamas at the games, on the athletics end. Challenging for the top honors were Miller and fellow countryman Chris Brown, who were pinned as favorites in the event. However, Wednesday's showdown, which was held in the Telmex Athletics Stadium, saw Miller highlighted, leaving Brown to settle for seventh, in a time of 45.89 seconds.
Brown was the defending champion winning the gold medal down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007. He also anchored The Bahamas to a gold medal in the men's 4x400m relay. Stopping Brown from a repeat was Nery Brenes Cardenas, from Costa Rica, who crossed the finish line in 44.65 seconds. Cardenas' time was a personal best. Also turning in a personal best time was Lugelin Santos Aquino of the Dominican Republic. Aquino stopped the clock at 44.71 seconds.
Starting things off on the track for The Bahamas yesterday was Michael Mathieu, competing in the men's 200m. Running in heat four of five, Mathieu turned in a winning time of 20.81 seconds. He will run out of lane eight in tonight's final. Lansford Spence and Mathieu are the only runners representing the English-speaking Caribbean to advance to the final. Other big names include Cuba's Roberto Skyers, and Sandro Viana and Bruno de Barros, both of Brazil. The event is scheduled to start at 6:50 p.m.
Hoping to soar his way to a medal today is Donald Thomas, competing in the Men's high jump. Thomas is the sole competitor for The Bahamas in the event. Also bearing the country's flag is Laverne Eve, in the Women's Javelin which will also take place today.
