A magistrate yesterday set bail at $50,000 with two sureties for a public school teacher accused of drug possession with intent to supply.
Colin Michael Evans, who is British, pleaded not guilty to a charge of marijuana possession with intent to supply at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell earlier this week.
According to defense attorney Dion Smith, who appeared for the bail hearing, Evans, who works at Sir Jack Hayward High School, has been in the country since 1984.
Evans, who has permanent residency, was arrested on Grand Bahama on October 12.  According to police, officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit were on mobile patrol when they stopped and searched a gray car on Queens Cove Road.  The officers allegedly found a crocus sack that contained 176 pounds of marijuana, with a wholesale street value of $176,000.
Smith said that Evans required lots of fluids because he had prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland.
Bethell said she would inform the prison doctor about Evans' condition.  His trial begins on May 9, 2012.
Magistrate Bethell also granted $50,000 bail with two sureties to the 61-year-old woman who police arrested after they allegedly found 111 pounds of marijuana in her home.
Beverly Rudella Laing of Lobster Avenue, Golden Gates, pleaded not guilty to a charge of marijuana possession with intent to supply.
Police allegedly found the drugs in a bedroom when they executed a search warrant on her home on October 12.
Her lawyer Shaka Serville said that Laing was on medication for a multiplicity of ailments, including hypertension, diabetes and issues with her thyroid and heart.
Her trial begins on May 8, 2012.
