Raising Their Voice In Song

Thu, Oct 20th 2011, 11:02 AM

The 50-voice strong Anglican Chorale will lift their voice in harmony at their sixth annual "Festival of Hymns & Anthems" at St. Agnes Church on Blue Hill Road on Sunday, October 23 beginning at 4 p.m. The chorale will sing many familiar hymns from the new provincial hymnal such as, "Lift High The Cross", "On Jordan's Bank The Baptist's Cry", "Lift Up Your Heads You Mighty Gates", "All My Heart This Night Rejoices", "Christians Awake"!

"Salute the happy Morn", "Low In The grave He Lay", "This Joyful Eastertide", and "The family That Prays" and "O God We Thank You For This Day", written by Fr. Harry Ward and Darville "Sonny" Walkine, respectively.  The congregation is also expected to be actively involved in the singing. Under the patronage of the Right Reverend Laish Zane Boyd, Sr., and his wife, the free event will take up a love offering, from which part proceeds will go towards the rebuilding of St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Fresh Creek, Andros, which was destroyed by fire. Since its inception in 2006, the hymn festival has become one of the signature events of the Diocese.  Two CDs have been produced from previous concerts, featuring favorite hymns and anthems of the church.

The chorale also produced the highly successful "Hope For the Nation" concert in 2010, which has been played on local television stations.  The objective of the chorale is to bring together people who are interested in keeping alive the singing of the traditional hymns of the church, while at the same time singing more contemporary music, all to the glory of God. Directed by Rosemary C. Hanna, the chorale is made up of members from New Providence Anglican churches as well as the wider Christian community.  The Chorale will be accompanied by veteran organist, Jeffrey Sturrup and a brass ensemble.
