Protect unborn babies in general

Dear Editor,

The recent murders of pregnant mothers Erica Ward and Baresha Glinton-Lewis and their unborn babies have rightly brought about public outrage, and some have called for laws to be passed to also treat the death of such babies as murder.
While we wholeheartedly agree with them, we note with sadness that some who are protesting are overlooking (knowingly or unknowingly) a more horrific act that should engender even more public outrage: elective abortion.
This glaring disparity forces us to ask this question: What is the difference between directly killing an unborn baby through a "medical" act versus indirectly killing a baby through a criminal act?
The unvarnished truth is that there is no difference in that both babies die. However, babies who die as a result of the death of their mothers die a far more humane death than the countless numbers of babies who die in elective abortions in The Bahamas and around the world.
Knowing that some might misunderstand the point we seek to make, we hasten to say that we are in no way condemning those who have had abortions; we merely seek to leverage the current public outrage against the murder of pregnant mothers and their unborn children to point to a more horrific practice that quietly kills unborn babies every day.
By bringing attention to this common place practice of elective abortions, we hope that it will result in public discourse and the necessary legislation to protect unborn babies in general, not just those who die indirectly through a criminal act.
As ministers of the Gospel, as we regularly do, we also use this opportunity to hold out to all sinners the grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ that we have personally come to know in the pardon of our own sins; indeed, His grace is greater than all of our sins, individually and collectively.

Yours, etc.,
PASTORS LYALL BETHEL,
ALLAN LEE and CEDRIC MOSS
