Statement by US Ambassador Nicole Avant: Reaffirming the resilience of the human spirit on September 11

Fri, Sep 9th 2011, 12:11 PM

US Ambassador Nicole AvantOn September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people from more than 90 nations perished in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  On Sunday, the United States will mark the 10th anniversary of those attacks that brought so much pain to thousands of families.  It will be a time to honor all those that we've lost, and a time to reaffirm the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
President Obama took inspiration from the victims and survivors of terrorism by establishing September 11 as a National Day of Service.   Last year, 11.5 million people -- including the president and First Lady Michelle Obama -- participated in the day of service, helping charitable organizations and community groups throughout the United States.
On Friday, the U.S. Embassy responded to President Obama's call to service by breathing new life into the children's corner at the G.K. Symonette Library in Yellow Elder Gardens and through a U.S. Coast Guard-led beach clean-up on Jaws Beach.  In addition, on Sunday, the U.S. flags on the U.S. Embassy Compound and at my Liberty Overlook residence will also be flown at half-staff in memory of the events ten years ago.
The 10th anniversary of September 11 is a moment where all societies can reflect on the enduring strength of the human spirit and recognize our vital partnerships. In doing so, we send a unified message: Terrorism will not prevail.
On behalf of President Obama and the entire U.S. Mission, I would like to express my appreciation to the government and the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas for being a steadfast partner in reducing the threat of terrorism through your commitment to core democratic values, counterterrorism and border security cooperation.
