A POLICE officer is being questioned over his alleged involvement in an armed robbery in which a woman claims she was sexually assaulted. Police say the incident happened at around 11.20pm on Thursday when officers received information of an armed robbery on Marathon Road.

It is understood that a man and woman were at a business establishment on Marathon Road when they were approached by two heavily armed men. The men robbed the victims of cash, two cell phones and two laptops.  Sources say the man was pistol-whipped several times and the woman was sexually assaulted before the thugs drove off in a Honda Civic.

However, police were able to locate the robber due to GPS tracking in one of the cell phones.

Police then went to Ragged Island Street where they located the vehicle. Inside the car they found a machine gun, a hand gun, a large amount of ammunition, the victim's cell phones, laptops as well as the clothing which was described to officers. Three people were taken into custody, including a police officer.

Police spokesman Supt Stephen Dean confirmed an officer was arrested, but he could not say if he is expected to be charged with the others.

Supt Dean said if the officer is found to be involved in any wrongdoing, the police force has a procedure that will be carried out. Investigations continue.
