Wide smiles were in abundance on Saturday, 27 August, 2011, as Hon. Tommy Turnquest, MP for Mt. Moriah, hosted his 23rd annual Back-to-School Party for the children in his constituency. Hundreds of children were in attendance, and they and their parents were treated to food, fun and festivities at the Bahamas Union of Teachers’ Headquarters on Bethel Avenue. Each child was presented with a backpack full of school supplies that included books, pens, pencils and other school supplies to assist them as they geared up for the opening of school.

Minister Turnquest had to travel on Saturday to hurricane affected Family Islands, and so his wife, Shawn, represented him. Mrs. Turnquest led an inspirational charge to the children, encouraging them to pay attention to their parents and their teachers, to do their homework and work hard in school. Also speaking to the children on safety was Assistant Superintendent of Police Samuel Butler, officer in charge of the Grove Station.

Derek Adams and “Charlie the Yellow Bahamian” lightened the mood. The ventriloquist and his puppet entertained the young and old alike. His jokes kept the children laughing, and his message to the young to always stay on the straight and narrow was well-taken.

The hard-working Mt. Moriah team made sure that it was an enjoyable and entertaining afternoon for all in attendance. The children and their parents were grateful for the school supplies and showed great enthusiasm toward the approaching new school year. In sum, the event was a rewarding experience for all involved.
