Police have charged two brothers with last month's murder of Harry Knowles.  Kevin Johnson, 21, and Deangelo Johnson, 20, both of Key West Street, yesterday were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez on the murder charge.  Prosecutors allege that the men are responsible for Knowles' shooting death on July 21. According to police, Knowles, 20, was shot multiple times while at Key West Street.

He had recently been released from prison after serving a sentence for drug possession with intent to supply, police said.  The accused did not have to enter a plea to the charge. Prosecutors plan to bypass a preliminary inquiry before a magistrate and send the case to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI) on September 28.

Gomez remanded the men into custody until their next scheduled court date.  Attorney Stanley Rolle, who represents both men, alleged police abused his clients while in custody. Rolle claimed that officers beat his clients with an aluminum bat and placed a plastic bag over their heads in order to extract involuntary statements.

Rolle also said police withheld food from the Johnsons since their return from Freeport, Grand Bahama to New Providence.  Gomez said he would recommend that prison officials keep the men with inmates around their ages after Rolle said they had received death threats from within the prison.
