Meacher Fights At Home This Saturday

For the first time in over a year, Bahamian super featherweight Meacher 'Major Pain' Major will fight in front of his home crowd here in The Bahamas.  Major, 18-4-1, is set to take on Cuban Alex Perez in an eight-round main event this Saturday at the Nassau Stadium. The show, which is geared to bring professional boxing back in The Bahamas, is being dubbed 'The Comeback' and is being staged by C & M Promotions.

Ryan 'Big Youth' McKenzie is scheduled to take on Colombian Alex Lubo in a six rounder, and John 'The Beast' Wesley is set to challenge Dencil 'Death' Miller in a four-round bout. A few amateur bouts are scheduled on the undercard. Popular Bahamian professional Jerome 'The Bronze Bomber' Ellis was also scheduled to fight on the undercard, but had to withdraw due to the death of his father. The show itself is set to get underway at 8:00 p.m. this Saturday.

"This is my first fight in a while, and I'm real excited about it," said Major. "First of all, I just want to thank the Almighty God for blessing me with a wonderful talent. He allows me to go out there and give it my all each and every time I fight - also, for keeping me fresh without any injuries. I feel renewed and ready and excited for this event," he added.

The 29-year-old Major, who currently trains out of West Buffalo, New York, said that he is also grateful to Charlie Major Jr. for bringing back the sport of boxing here in the country. Major Jr. is the promoter of the event.

"I think that it's a big step in the right direction," said Meacher Major. "As boxers we need to stay active and this is an opportunity for us to do that. A young guy like Ryan McKenzie is really taking boxing seriously and this could go a long way in helping his career. He did some training up there in New York and he appears to be ready to go.

"I also want to thank my parents, Anthony and Patrice Major, my family and friends, and all of my supporters out there. They keep me going. Also, thanks to my trainers Gregory Storr and Nat Knowles for getting me to this level.

"This guy Perez, I don't know much about him but I know what I'm bringing to the ring. Sometimes you can't look at a fighter's record and tell what kind of intensity he will bring to the ring. Experience is what matters in a lot of cases. Right now, I feel that I am in great shape and I am ready to go."

After this fight, Major said that he will be aiming for a Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) title shot, quite possibly before the year is out.

"Well that's the goal for now," said Major. "Right now, I just want to stay busy and stay up there in the ratings. I feel real good about where I'm at right now. Where I'm training right now up there in Buffalo - that's the kind of environment I can relate to because there are a lot of hungry fighters there and I have that same hunger. There are so many guys there who are determined to get to the next level and we push each other. I think that this fight will get me back on track to where I want to be."

Just like he does every summer, Major will host his 'Back to School' jamboree at the end of August. The event will be held on August 27, and he said that he is looking for all the support he can get.

"Any kind of donation of school supplies will be greatly appreciated," said Major. "The country is still in an economic downturn, and a lot of families out there can't afford the basic things for their kids for school. I just want to do my part in helping out the community. That's my main focus outside of boxing. I'm trying to be some kind of help for some of these kids who are growing up - trying to solve some of the social ills that are going on in the community. Maybe it can assist in doing something about the crime problem that we have," he added.

The general admission this Saturday will be $15, and $5 for children 12-years-old and younger. Ring side tickets will be sold for $20 each. The show is being sponsored by Ali' Glass House.
