An entire community gathered around the scene of the country's latest murder yesterday afternoon, after a 20-year-old man was shot to death during an apparent robbery just off the Charles W. Saunders Highway, according to police officials. This latest murder brings the country's murder count to 73 for the year. Police press liaison officer Sergeant Chrislyn Skippings said two men were in their apartment at about 2:45 p.m. when a man armed with a handgun rushed in and demanded jewelry from the men. She said one of the men was then subsequently shot while the other was left unscathed. Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the apartment complex but the  20-year-old man dead was already dead at the scene, according to Skippings. His name has yet to be released by police. When The Nassau Guardian arrived on the scene it was overflowing with onlookers and friends and family of the deceased. Cars were parked all along the side of the highway and the scene caused a long line of onlooker traffic to build up on both sides of the road. When the man's body was brought out by morticians, friends and family began to wail and cry uncontrollably. Skippings said police do not have any leads at this time and are actively continuing investigations into the matter. Also this weekend, a man in Grand Bahama evaded capture with the help of other men after police attempted to arrest him for possession of a handgun, ammunition and a quantity of suspected marijuana. Police said shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, officers acting on information proceeded to Bruce Avenue where they observed the man acting suspiciously. When the officers attempted to arrest him, a group of men from the area prevented the arrest, according to police reports. However, police said they took into custody a 32-year-old man of Weddell Avenue for obstruction, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. On New Providence, officers of the Central Division, in an operation they conducted on Friday called "Spring Tide", arrested seven people and cited 67 drivers for traffic infractions, according to police reports. Police said they also picked up five Haitian nationals for "immigration purposes".  Two of them were arrested in connection with stolen vehicles. Police said they are also investigating a jet ski accident that left a 42-year-old Louisiana man in hospital. According to police reports, a female relative  of the victim who was operating another jet ski, collided with the victim in an area just west of Cabbage Beach shortly after noon Saturday.  Police said the man is detained in stable condition. Police are also requesting the public's help in locating two men responsible for robbing the Texaco Service Station on Joe Farrington Road of an undetermined amount of cash. Police reports revealed that both of the men were armed with handguns.  According to police the men fled the area in a northerly direction into the Pineyard Road area.
