A small fire affected the Mackey Street headquarters of the Free National Movement (FNM) yesterday morning.
FNM Chairman Carl Bethel revealed that shortly after 3:00 a.m. he received information from the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the fire department that a small fire had been extinguished at the political party's headquarters.
"On arrival at the scene I was permitted to view the interior of the building, which suffered smoke damage and some water damage; but otherwise appears to be structurally sound," noted Bethel in a press statement released yesterday.  He added that several glass doors had been shattered by firefighters as they forced their way into the building in an effort to extinguish the fire.  According to Bethel a full investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire was slated to commence yesterday.
"The FNM wishes to express gratitude to the brave men and women of the police force and the fire department for their prompt intervention and heroic actions which prevented further damage.  We also thank those observant members of the public who were walking home and observing the issuance of smoke from the building and promptly alerted the police."
Bethel assured the general public that once the police force completes its investigation into the cause of the fire, work will immediately commence to restore the headquarters to full operational capacity.
