FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - A 24-year-old mother has become Grand Bahama's fifth homicide victim for 2011. The woman sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head on Saturday night while in the Royal Bahamia Estates area. According to police, they received a call around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, notifying them that a female had been shot. Uniformed and plain clothes officers responded and they learned the woman had taken a bullet to the head, and she was transported by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency section of the Rand Memorial Hospital to receive treatment. The victim, who is a resident of Eight Mile Rock, succumbed to her injuries a short time later, mere minutes before 11:00 p.m, police said. Police said that the motive for the fatal shooting is unknown at this time. They are calling for the help of the Grand Bahama community to assist in solving this crime, and are urging anyone with information that could assist their investigation to call 350-3107/8, 352-9774/5 or 911. Detectives from the Central Detective Unit, Scenes of Crime Unit and uniformed divisions are conducting an intense investigation into the shooting, according to police. Police are also urging the public to come forth with any information they may have on the homicides of 31-year-old Kiano Javier Martinborough and 29-year-old Sonny Anafolis, the third and fourth homicide victims for the year. Both were shot in the Garden Villas area. Martinborough was shot in the head on Sunday, May 8, 2011 sometime after 11:00 p.m. When police arrived on Adventurer's Way after being notified about the shooting, officers came across Martinborough, who was lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead shortly after being transported by ambulance to the Rand Memorial Hospital. Anafolis, who was shot in the back of the neck on Monday, May 16, became paralyzed from his injuries and remained in critical condition until he died on Friday, May 27 at the Princess Margaret Hospital in New Providence. Sources told The Freeport News that the deaths of Martinborough and Anafolis were connected, alleging that Anafolis was the intended victim the night Martinborough was killed. The first homicide for the year occurred when 24-year-old Tamaro Johnson was stabbed on Sunday, March 8, outside of Club Rock N' Roll in the International Bazaar. Johnson, who had received multiple stab wounds to the body, succumbed to his injuries the next day at the Rand Memorial Hospital. Twenty-one-year-old Jonathan McKenzie and 18-year-old Darieo Demetrius Smith were charged with his murder. Both will return to court on July 13, 2011 for a preliminary inquiry. Forty-two-year-old Patrick Russell of Lewis Yard was killed on Monday, March 7, becoming the island's second homicide. Russell had been sitting in his vehicle through an unpaved road between Weddell Avenue and Bruce Avenue when another vehicle approached and the occupants opened fire on him. He sustained multiple gunshots wound about the body and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Rand Memorial Hospital. Twenty-eight-year-old Leonard Louis Barnett was charged with his murder.
