"Bed-er" Bed Rules

What is insomnia? Insomnia means “difficulty sleeping”. It is important to know that this can include more than just trouble falling asleep. Three symptoms are typically described: Trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, and waking up too early in the morning.

Here are some very simple, proven guidelines to stop those feelings of being energized or wakeful in your bed. Lie down only when you intend to go to sleep, and only when you’re feeling sleepy. Do not use your bed for anything but sleep (and copulation). Ten minutes is the maximum you should lie awake while trying to fall asleep (20 minutes for those over 60). Set your alarm and get up at the same time every morning, regardless of how much you have slept the night before. Do not nap during the day. You should only nap if it has always been part of your daily lifestyle.  Even then, you should nap at the same time every day, and keep it short, less than an hour. Remember, good sleep comes from establishing consistent sleeping patterns!!
