THE team of Mark Knowles and Michal Mertinak got ousted in the quarterfinal of the Barcelona Open in Spain last week.

Knowles and Mertinak, seeded at No. 8, got a bye in the first round. They won their second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer.

They went on to the quarters when they ran into the top seeded team of American identical twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan and were eliminated in a hard fought 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 decision.

Knowles and Mertinak, now ranked at No. 15 on the ATP computer list, will take a break this week before they return to action at the Madrid Masters in a lead up to the French Open in Roland Garros.
