CDB delegates treated to a lively Bahamian welcome

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- A Junkanoo performance, delicious local cuisine and warm Bahamian hospitality greeted delegates attending the 40th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

Minister of State for Finance the Hon Zhivargo Laing, who is Chairman of the Board, officially welcomed the delegates during a reception at the Sheraton Nassau Resort on Cable Beach, Monday, May 17.

Mr Laing said he hoped that the meeting would be a productive one, as the CDB devises ways to assist the region in various economic and social projects, in the midst of a global economic recovery.

A welcome was also extended by the Minister of Tourism, Senator the Hon Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace who noted the return of the CDB meeting to The Bahamas after 10 years.

The Bahamas previously hosted the meeting in 1980 and 1990.

He said compared to then, tourism has come a long way in the Caribbean, particularly Nassau and Paradise Island, which account for 60 per cent of Bahamian tourist arrivals.

Up for discussions May 19-20, are development strategies, the need for increased funding, and the adjustment for new regulatory environment in line with international standards.

The Caribbean Development Bank is a regional financial institution established by an Agreement signed on October 18, 1969 in Kingston, Jamaica.
