NASSAU, The Bahamas --- Entry into the Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s Ranger Program has become “very competitive” since its establishment in 1996, with large numbers of young people now seeking admission annually, Minister of National Security O.A.T. “Tommy” Turnquest said.

Mr Turnquest said the high demand speaks volumes about the veracity of the program and the fine work being done by the men and women of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force who spearhead the Ranger Program.

Eighty-four youngsters representing 19 schools in New Providence were recently installed as Rangers during ceremonies at the Kendal G L Isaacs Gymnasium.

The 19 schools include S C McPherson, R M Bailey, D W Davis, Jordan Prince William, C H Reeves, Doris Johnson, C I Gibson, L W Young, Galilee Academy, Teleos Christian, Yellow Elder, C R Walker, A F Adderley, T A Thompson, C V Bethel, Government High, Zion Christian and Faith Temple.

S C McPherson (17), C R Walker (13) and Doris Johnson (11) recorded double digits insofar as the number of students installed.

“The Royal Bahamas defence Force continues to dedicate significant time and resources to the Ranger Program because it believes in the young people of The Bahamas and in what (our) young people can accomplish,” Mr Turnquest said.

“Today, many of the former participants in the Program are making their necessary contribution to nation-building in our country, including within the ranks of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.”

Mr Turnquest told the young Rangers that the Program’s motto: “Determined, Disciplined and Dedicated” will instil a positive “can do attitude in you.”

“They are to help you set personal and professional goals for your advancement and the advancement of your communities and our country. Be determined, disciplined and dedicated so as to achieve whatever your goals are,” Mr Turnquest added.

The National Security Minister said the lessons taught in the program go beyond instruction in a range of skills including the rudiments of survival, camping and hiking, but will also focus on building self-esteem and community awareness and responsibility.

“You have been chosen from among your peers and this, in itself, should be a special source of pride and accomplishment for you,” Mr Turnquest told the 84 participants.

“I encourage you to continue to work hard in school and to advance yourself academically and technically in areas that would benefit you.

“Let this Program be an important turning point in your lives; let it be a time when you become a role model for other young people; let it be a time when you further develop your goals and aspirations and your commitment to do your part to move our country forward, upward, onward, together,” Mr Turnquest added.
