In an effort to assist those greatly impacted by Hurricane Matthew, the Cat Island Sailing club will host a boat cruise this weekend with the majority of the proceeds going toward families affected during the hurricane.

"We at the Cat Island Sailing Club want to show how truly sorry we are for those that sustained damages to their homes in Andros, New Providence and Grand Bahama," said Cat Island Sailing Club President Pat Strachan. "We are looking to raise funds for those in need, because you have a lot of people that are really hurting since the hurricane hit The Bahamas."

The boat leaves at 5 p.m. on Saturday and tickets are priced at $20.

"We are encouraging all of the usual supporters of the Cat Island Sailing Club to come out and support this boat cruise that can help so many," Strachan said. "Those that come out will be in for a good time. We have a lot of entertainment in store and I know that everyone that comes out will enjoy his or her time on the boat.

We want it to be a success so that we can raise some funds make a good donation."

According to Strachan, the Lassie Do Boys, D.J. Gold Digger and other Bahamian artists will be on hand for the boat cruise.
Strachan also said that, despite the fact that there were some heavy showers and winds in Cat Island, the regatta site, which was renovated two years ago, remained intact throughout the storm.

"I spoke to the executive officer of the association that lives down there and he was happy to report that there was no damage done to the site," he said. "Obviously, these kinds of things set you back. But fortunately for us there was no damage done in New Bight."

Although the eye of the storm passed over New Providence, the intensity of the storm picked up as it moved over Andros and Grand Bahama. The hardest hit communities in Grand Bahama were West End, Hunters, Pinder's Point, Lewis Yard and Eight Mile Rock as a powerful storm surge rushed into homes and other structures. Lowe Sound, Andros was also considerably damaged in the storm, as many poles were ripped down by the storm and almost all of the homes were destroyed.
