NewCo network holding in NP, issues in GB

NewCo Limited 2015 will undergo a three to four week restoration period post Hurricane Matthew. However, the company still intends to hold its commercial launch sometime in November.

CEO of NewCo Damian Blackburn told Guardian Business that some of the radio equipment on the cell towers in New Providence was displaced as a result of wind and water damage from the storm.

"It is not affecting service, but it would affect coverage," said Blackburn.

The company has 51 cell sites on New Providence and 22 on Grand Bahamas - a total of 73 sites.

"During the storm, the systems in New Providence held up pretty well. Most of the issues that were experienced were power related. Over half of our network held up during the storm and our network in New Providence is providing coverage on the whole island," said Blackburn.

Damian explained that the company deployed more generators after the storm.

"Occasionally, we still do lose sites because of power issues," he said.

On Grand Bahama, however, he said that there is only limited service. Blackburn said the expectation was to recover a large proportion of the network in Grand Bahama over the weekend. Still he acknowledged that some sites would take a while until the transmission comes back up.

NewCo's minority shareholder, Cable Bahamas Limited, and the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) are coordinating efforts in Freeport to fully restore the network, according to Blackburn.
