Amy Chua makes me smile. Perhaps it’s because I have heard tales of being whipped with the brown drop cord or chapped by your ma with a high heel shoe. Or maybe it’s ‘cause I’ve been burned with an iron by my big sister when I annoyed her. Maybe it’s because I have witnessed the plaiting of a tamarind switch or because I watched a boyhood friend of mine pounded with a broom by his grandmother (he was laughing the whole time).
