Some 200 children representing three summer camps in New Providence enjoyed a day of fun and frolic at C.I. Gibson Park, Howard Street, Chippingham.

Organized by Fort Charlotte Urban Renewal, which falls under the purview of the Urban Renewal Commission, the Fun Day included over 100 children from the Fort Charlotte Community Centre Camp, approximately 50 children from Holy Spirit Anglican Church Camp and some 50 children of the Fort Charlotte Urban Renewal Camp.

ASP Dencil Barr, who heads Fort Charlotte Urban Renewal said, “We decided to get all the children together to have one fun gathering because they are in one community. We wanted them to be able to experience care, respect and trust among each other and to have camaraderie.

“Our job is to partner with other entities in the community and this is a form of partnership. We supplied all of the items for this event and brought them on board.”

Throughout the day the children enjoyed games including basketball, obstacle courses, bouncing castles, and sweet treats, lunch and soft drinks.

ASP Barr said in addition to fun, the Fort Charlotte Urban Renewal Camp focuses on discipline, Christian values, education, and history.

“We try to make it a combination of fun, games and education. The main key is discipline. When the camp is finished they will walk away having gained something.”

The children, ranging in ages 5 to 16, have been on two field trips since the Camp began three weeks ago. “We took them to a major restaurant on West Bay Street where they learned about table manners and etiquette. They will also go to a movie showing and Ardastra Gardens to experience wild life and nature,” he added.
