The results just keep getting better and better for Team Bahamas at the Americas Zone Group III Davis Cup competition, currently ongoing at the Club de Tenis La Paz, in La Paz, Bolivia.

The Bahamas defeated Bermuda three matches to none yesterday, to secure a spot in the tournament semi-finals and find itself one win away from ending a seven-year drought of being stuck in the Americas Zone Group III.

Spencer Newman got action started for The Bahamas against Bermuda, winning in straight sets over Gavin Manders. He prevailed in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4. Newman broke Manders twice in each set, and won 68 of the 121 total points. The match lasted for just an hour and 22 minutes.

Younger brother Baker Newman was next on the court for The Bahamas and he easily disposed of Neal Towlson in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2. Newman won a gigantic 87 percent of his first serves (28-for-32) compared to just 48 percent (19-for-39) for Towlson. He also broke Towlson four times in the match, and won 67 of the 109 total points.

Spencer Newman and Marvin Rolle ended the tie for The Bahamas, dominating the doubles team of Jenson Bascome and David Thomas in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3. The Bermudian team served up seven double faults compared to just one for The Bahamas, and were broken four times in the match compared to just once for the Bahamian team. Newman and Rolle won 62 of the 108 total points.

The Bahamas moved to 3-0 in the team standings and assured itself of a spot in the semi-finals, while Bermuda remained winless at 0-2. A win in the semis would assure The Bahamas of a promotion to the Americas Zone Group II for 2017. The Bahamas has been stuck in group three for seven years.

The Bahamas defeated Honduras on Monday and Costa Rica on Tuesday, both by margins of 2-1.

The team plays Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow in its final pool round-robin match. Like Bermuda, Trinidad & Tobago is also winless, sitting at 0-2.

The Bahamas' 2016 Davis Cup Team consists of the Newman brothers, Baker and Spencer, Rolle and Kevin Major Jr. They emerged as the country's top four players after two rounds of The Bahamas Open and invitational trials.

The Bahamas is currently ranked 78th out of 134 countries that play Davis Cup. The competition, currently ongoing in La Paz, Bolivia, consists of round-robin match play - one pool of four teams (Pool A) and one pool of five teams (Pool B). The winner of Pool A will play the runner-up of Pool B and the winner of Pool B will play the runner-up of Pool A in the crossover playoffs to determine which two nations will advance to the Americas Zone Group II in 2017.
