Minister of Financial Services and Local Government the Hon. Hope Strachan officially opened the 20th Anniversary Exhibition on Local Government, celebrating 20 years since the establishment of Local Government in the Family Islands, on Friday morning, June 10, at The Mall at Marathon.

Minister Strachan expressed pleasure at opening the exhibition, which conveys the story and history of Local Government and its impact on the lives of Family Island residents.

She remarked: “Local Government at its very core is about bringing democracy closer to the people.  It is about giving people a sense of ownership, in determining and establishing the paths for growth and opportunity in their own communities.”

The exhibition, she said, gave a glimpse of the history of local government that was present in the Family Islands since the 1800s and the fact that even decades ago national leaders saw the need for local island communities to have some responsibility for day-to-day management of their own affairs.

Presently, she noted, Local Government has the potential to be an engine of economic growth for the Family Islands.

Minister Strachan is pictured above giving remarks at the Mall exhibition, and being led on an official tour of the exhibit by the Director of Local Government Charles King.
