Murder accused declared unfit to stand trial

A man accused of murder was yesterday deemed unfit to enter a plea.

Dario Belle, 22, admitted responsibility for the 2012 beating death of Harold Sands, 55, when he appeared before Senior Justice Jon Isaacs for an arraignment in July 2013. Sands was found naked in a disused bus off Mount Royal Avenue with his head bashed in.

In September 2013, a psychiatrist told the court that Belle's psychotic disorder rendered him unfit to stand trial.

Belle claimed that "voices" told him to kill Sands.

At the time, the doctor said that Belle's condition could improve with the appropriate treatment.

Senior Justice Stephen Isaacs yesterday impanelled a nine-member jury to determine Belle's ability to stand trial.

After hearing testimony from a psychiatrist and submissions from Belle's lawyer Ian Cargill, Isaacs directed the jury to find Belle unfit to stand trial.

Belle, however, remains in custody.
