There was standing room only in the Kettel Centre, Hooper’s Bay Tuesday, May 4, as YES Bahamas Campaign Co-Chair Lynn Holowesko, Co-Executive Director Cheryl Bazard, and Exuma Local Co-Chairs Sophia Hart-Rolle and Kenneth Nixon took the initiative to the residents of Exuma for discussion on the proposed constitutional amendments. Island Administrator Neil Campbell and Local Government practitioners were also in attendance.

Mrs. Holowesko, former Senate President described the proposed constitutional amendments on equality as the “right” thing for The Bahamas.

A former FNM election candidate for Exuma, Mrs. Holowesko affirmed that she was not there in a political context, but as someone who firmly believes in the proposed amendments as a necessity for The Bahamas to develop and become a part of the modern world instead of the ancient idea that men and women should not be equal in the law.

“There is a time for party, and there is a time for country and this is a time for country,” she said.

Exuma Local Co-Chair Sophia Hart stated that The Bahamas is at a crossroads – a moment that will define the nation for generations to come.

“This is why it is important for us to make the right decision for our sons and our daughters.

“When mothers must remain unwed to ensure that they pass their Bahamian citizenship on to their children, and children must rely on a visitor’s stamp to spend time with their single Bahamian father in the country of his birth, we are not protecting the foundation of our nation, we are not protecting our family. Voting yes on June 7th, 2016 gives us an opportunity to create a Bahamas with strong families and equality for our children whether they are male or female.”

She urged the audience to join the ‘vote YES’ campaign.

Local Co-chair Nixon emphasized that this is the second time that the referendum has been presented to the public. He warned that there may not be a third opportunity and encouraged those present to vote in the affirmative.

A question and answer period followed the meeting. In the weeks leading to June 7, the vote YES campaign team will travel to settlements throughout Exuma to speak to residents and clarify misconceptions on the proposed amendments to the Constitution.

Similar campaigns have been launched in Grand Bahama and Abaco and plans are afoot to launch the campaign in Long Island, Bimini and Eleuthera.
