An armed man shot six people in Sunshine Park around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving one man dead, police said. The group was standing in a park in the community when the assailant pulled up in a white Honda Legend. The victims included five men and a woman. The deceased died in hospital, according to police.

Nine men were arrested in connection with the shooting, but most were released.

As of yesterday, police had one man in custody they believe is responsible for the shooting.

"When you hear six people are shot in a community it sends fear throughout that community," Chief Superintendent Clayton Fernander said. "And so, we were aggressively out all night, just pursuing lines of enquiry and touching people in the community who also assisted us with information, which led to the arrest of who we believe is the person responsible. And that's what we try to do in every situation.

"We feel good that we will tie this up very shortly."

The killing pushed the murder count to 42 for 2016.

There were 45 murders this time last year.
