Tida Wave – Class “A” Winner National Family Island Regatta 2015

The National Family Island Regatta is just days away and the island of Exuma is gearing up for this much anticipated cultural tradition. The 63rd annual event will be held from April 26-30 in Elizabeth Harbour, George Town.

During the four days of sailing over 70 native sloops representing Bahamian islands are expected to compete in various races.

Danny Strachan, Chairman and Commodore of the National Family Island Committee described the National Family Island Regatta as an “institution” which has become a “vital” part of the sporting and cultural fabric of Bahamians.

Prime Minister Perry Christie, in his message, said, “It has become an event of cultural and social significance as it brings together people of all backgrounds and from all walks of life to this one-of-a-kind event for an occasion that combines the best of what Exuma and The Bahamas have to offer.”

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Focusing on Our Youth,” Mr. Strachan said: “We need to focus attention on training the new generation of sailors for the sustainability of this great sporting and cultural tradition but also to win another Gold medal in sailing as Sir Durward did in Tokyo in 1964.”

Upholding the theme, Prime Minister Perry Christie opined that Bahamians must do all within their power to prepare the future generation for their rightful place in the communities by inculcating values and principles of civility, comity, tolerance and respect among them.

The Governor-General, Dame Marguerite Pindling, commended the organizers for selecting this year’s theme. She said, “As special emphasis is placed on passing the tradition to another generation of sailors, I trust that this will be another fruitful and memorable event.”

Along with sailing, cultural displays and opportunities to sample native cuisine, Bahamians and foreigners participate in onshore activities including fashion shows, beauty pageants and other traditions.

A highlight of the 2016 National Family Island Regatta will be the recognition of Sheldon Gibson, Effort Kemp and Steve Smith. The three stellar Bahamian giants will be awarded for their contributions to the development of sailing in The Bahamas. Mr. Gibson is a native of Crooked Island, Mr. Kemp hails from Black Point, Exuma and Mr. Smith is a descendant of Staniel Cay, Exuma.

Prime Minister Christie described them as persons who have given without ‘counting the costs’. “I can think of no better examples than these three individuals who view sloop sailing as a labour of love. Their recognition is well deserved,” he said.
