BAMSI to hold first graduation ceremony

The first graduation ceremony for 16 to 20 students at the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) will be held June 2016 in North Andros.

In 2014, the institute started with fewer than 40 students that attended an orientation in North Andros. The first set of classes commenced at the institute in September 2014.

President of BAMSI Godfrey Eneas told Guardian Business the graduating students will leave the institute with an associate degree, and will have access to careers in leading public sector institutes.

BAMSI provides associate programs in marine science, agriculture and in agribusiness.

"Some of them will be extension officers to enhance technical capabilities of the public sector both in BAMSI, the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC), and The Bahamas' Department of Agriculture," said Eneas.

While the president is pleased with BAMSI's progress, he insisted that the amount of students the institute can facilitate is limited due to construction constraints.

The North Andros campus is incomplete because it is "constrained" by a lack of facilities.

"We need to expand in order to take new students. We need new classrooms and more classroom space. The classroom blocks and the cafeteria should be ready for next semester," said Eneas.

When questioned if cost was a matter in the delay of completion, Eneas said, "Money was never a problem."
