The participation in the first National High School Basketball Championships, is proof that there are more young people involved in wholesome activities, than the few wreaking havoc on society, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development, the Hon. Philip 'Brave' Davis during the closing of the event on Monday.

The championships, held from March 10 to 14, were opened by the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance on Thursday, March 10 wherein some 26 teams inclusive of seven female squads were in Grand Bahama for the classic. Islands represented included North and South Andros, Abaco, Cat Island, San Salvador, New Providence and Grand Bahama.

"Events such as these" said the Deputy Prime Minister, "are tangible evidence that, far from what the naysayers hold, indeed, all is not lost; and as Minister responsible for Urban Renewal, I pledge to do all within my power to facilitate young people becoming key agents for peace and development of The Bahamas.

"I expect, therefore, that all of you will use basketball to develop values that help make you better citizens now and later. Basketball has been proven to stimulate peaceful and respectful interaction among the people and countries."

Mr. Davis thanked the tournament's participants for their commitment to the game and to making their country better. He encouraged them to "be tolerant of your brothers and sisters. Our differences make us a great people."

Also present for the closing of the tournament was Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance the Hon. Michael Halkitis. Minister Darville assisted the Deputy Prime Minister in crowning the champions, the C.C. Sweeting Cobras.
