A magistrate on Friday sentenced Phillip Adderley, a former defense force marine convicted of illegal gun possession, to two years' imprisonment. In passing sentence, Magistrate Samuel McKinney said that as a law enforcement officer Adderley was held to a higher standard. He said, "More was and is expected of you as a law enforcement officer."

Officers responded to reports of gunshots near the Hot Spot on Faith Avenue around 2:40 a.m. on October 6, 2014. Those officers allegedly saw Adderley and Steven Wemyss leaving the area in a white Honda Accord. Adderley, the passenger, was allegedly firing shots into the air as the car sped away. He had completed a tour of duty at the Defence Force base shortly before the incident.

Police eventually stopped the car and found a 9mm pistol with its serial number erased and five rounds of 9mm ammunition in the car's glove compartment. The car belonged to Wemyss, who worked as a bellboy at Atlantis. McKinney said that the court took firearm offenses seriously, given the high percentage of gun-related murders in the country. He said that anyone found with an illegal firearm faced the "real possibility" of going to prison.

McKinney noted that he could impose a sentence of up to seven years. However, McKinney said he did not feel that was warranted. McKinney imposed concurrent sentences of two years on the gun charge and one year on the ammunition charge. Murrio Ducille represented Adderley and Tai Pinder represented Weymss. Sergeant Phillip Davis prosecuted.
