A man was shot to death late Wednesday night on West Bay Street near the Land Shark hotel, police reported.

Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle said an off-duty police officer observed two men arguing, and when he attempted to intervene, he heard a gunshot. Rolle said the shooter and several other men fled the scene in a Nissan Primera. The officer called for backup, and police intercepted the Nissan vehicle near Goodman's Bay. Nine men were arrested, according to police.

The shooting marked the 13th murder for 2016. It was the second murder for the week.

On Tuesday, police found a man's badly burned body in bushes off S.C. Bootle Highway, Abaco around 9 p.m.

Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade on Wednesday called the rate of murders, particularly in 2015, "disgraceful".
As part of the commissioner's Policing Plan for 2016, Greenslade pledged to expand the closed circuit television (CCTV) program; acquire the services of a helicopter for rapid response to serious crimes and patrols of hotspots, and explore the acquisition and lawful deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to crime statistics released on Wednesday, CCTV cameras captured 12 of the 146 murders in 2015. CCTV also reportedly captured two shootings, one incident of causing harm, an armed robbery, an assault with a deadly weapon, two assaults and one arson, among other crimes against person, property and traffic incidents.

There are around 243 CCTV cameras across New Providence.
