WITH heart disease one of the leading causes of death in The Bahamas and worldwide, The Grand Bahama Heart Association is raising awareness by hosting a major fundraising event in Freeport this month.

Association President Ethlyn Major said after months of planning, “The Great Heart Affair Luncheon” will take place on Friday, February 26, at noon at Le Chateau on the Green.

The association is asking residents and businesses to support the event, which is being held under the patronage of two distinguished local Bahamian physicians, Dr Pamela Etuk and Dr. Winston Forbes.

The month of February is observed as “Heart Month”.

In a press release, the association stated that health data compiled from more than 190 countries shows that heart disease remains the number one global cause of death, with 17.3 million deaths each year reported in “Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics – 2015 Update: A Report From the American Health Association.”

It further reported that the number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030.

Ms. Major said the luncheon is the association’s main fundraising activity.

“An exciting afternoon is planned for attendees, to educate, enlighten and entertain,” she said. “We will gather together to help those facing heart disease in our community get well, and help those who have yet to be touched by heart disease stay well. All initiatives geared towards prevention are paramount for the association.”

To stay healthy, the group said there are some things to remember: aim for a healthy weight; be active every day; use less salt and sodium in cooking; eat more fruit and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals and cut back on alcohol.
