Every year since its inception, RBC Royal Bank has sponsored its employees' participation in the events surrounding the Sunshine Insurance Marathon weekend of Marathon Bahamas and the 5K Race for the Cure. This year was no exception with the bank partnering as a silver sponsor of the 2016 event.

"The course is very scenic as it winds along the coast of New Providence," said Briony Seymour, RBC employee and runner. "You can see the beautiful aquamarine waters of The Bahamas for practically the entire course, and it featured Bahamian Junkanoo music along the way. We completed the half marathon two years in a row 2011 and 2012 and then again in 2014. We competed as a part of the RBC relay team for three years 2013, 2015 and 2016."

Marathon Bahamas included the seventh annual Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure and the sixth annual full marathon, half marathon and four-person relay. RBC also sponsored staff in the Susan Komen 5k Race for the Cure, a race they have participated in each year from inception to date. Seymour said it was great to see RBC taking an active part in healthy pursuits in the community in which staff could participate.

RBC participants said running the marathon gave them a sense of accomplishment.

"There was tremendous excitement and positive energy. We were cheered on as persons who are making a positive difference in the community," said Daphne Haines."

Linda Clarke, who participated in the 5K Race for the Cure, said she was happy to see so many of her colleagues participating.

"Being an organization that's committed to health and wellness of our employees, RBC continues to encourage involvement in this annual event," she said.

Proceeds from the Race for the Cure benefit five cancer charities in The Bahamas: The Cancer Association of Grand Bahama, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, The Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group, The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation and the Cancer Association of Grand Bahama.

"We are pleased that RBC supported this cause and that so many of our local employees got involved," said Nathaniel Beneby Jr., managing director, RBC Royal Bank, Bahamas, Cayman and Turks & Caicos Islands.
