Vixens take early advantage over the Truckers

The Scottsdale Vixens moved one step closer to capturing their 12th consecutive New Providence Volleyball Association (NPVA) women's title yesterday, knocking off the Johnson's Lady Truckers in four sets, in the first game of their best-of-five championship series, over at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium. They won the opening game comfortably, 25-18, 25-21, 30-32 and 25-17.

Middle attacker Krystel Brown said although they were victorious, there are still some areas that need tweaking ahead of the second game of the series which is set for Wednesday.

"In that third set we got a little over-confident and started making simple mistakes," she said. "We ruled the final set and knew there wasn't going to be a fifth set, because there wasn't even supposed to be a fourth set. We got things together and got the win."

This series marks the eighth consecutive time the two teams will play each other in the NPVA finals.

"This team is so tough to beat because we've been together for so long," Brown said. "We know them well, we have a strong offense and defense and we'll look to end this one in three."

Vixens Head Coach Macklyn Rolle said he wasn't too concerned about losing the third set, because he knows what his team is capable of.

"In that fourth set we just had to settle down," he said. "They started playing the type of defense that we usually play. I'm hoping that we can get three straight and just sweep them under the rug. We don't like to lose, and if we do lose a set, we come out stronger and more aggressive and that can be attributed to the competitive nature of the ladies."

Last year, the Vixens disposed of the Truckers in three games. In the final game of the series, they knocked them off in three sets, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-12.

The result of the first game of the men's championship series between the Scotiabank Defenders and National Fence Intruders was unavailable up to press time.

NPVA championship action continues on Wednesday night with game two of both the men and women's championships. The women's championship will start at 8 p.m., and the men will follow at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium.
