A 37-year-old fisherman was yesterday sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for breaking into an apartment rented by an American tourist on Paradise Island and stealing $2,275. The theft happened on Monday.

Wesley Deus, who also uses the name Wislet Denise, of Potter's Cay Dock, pleaded guilty to housebreaking and stealing from a dwelling house when he appeared before Magistrate Samuel Mckinney. Deus entered the residence through an open window and stole the money that belonged to Erin Hortsman, according to the evidence. Police caught Deus nearby and recovered the stolen property.

Deus, who did not have a lawyer, said that he needed the money to buy medicine for his mother who is ill. Deus has previous convictions for theft. Sergeant 1406 Phillip Davis was the prosecutor.
