New rowing center to assist able-bodied athletes as well as the disabled

The Bahamas National Rowing Center is currently under construction on John F. Kennedy Drive at Lake Cunningham, and will be a training location for the general public, clubs, schools and elite athletes, including the physically disabled athletes training for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

With a dwindling number of sporting disciplines available to the disabled public, rowing is an exception. Persons including the blind, the cripple, the deaf and the paralyzed, will be granted access to the new rowing facility, which is being built to accommodate persons with physical disabilities. This will help to increase the quality of life for all of the disabled in New Providence, and for persons who may not be able to participate in traditional sports.

The Bahamas Rowing Federation will work alongside the International Paralympic Federation; the Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC); the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture; and the heads of the centers for the disabled and Special Olympics, to develop a program to enable all persons with disabilities to be able to enjoy rowing, and if they so choose, compete at an international level.

Bahamas Rowing invites any person, male or female, with any physical disability, for example paralysis from the waist down, to contact the federation at bahamasrowing@gmail.com to train to participate in the 2016 Paralympic Camp, by November 20, 2015. Also, persons wishing to compete in the 2016 Olympic Trials can contact Bahamas Rowing at the aforementioned e-mail address as soon as possible.
