Customs' bonded letter renewal policies have "put a cut ass on business" in Freeport, a former Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce president telling Tribune Business the city's construction industry having been especially heavy, with 20-40 per cent rises in materials/appliance costs ensuring "it has not restarted after Christmas".
Christoper Lowe, operations manager at Kelly's (Freeport), one of the island's major wholesalers, told this newspaper that almost every property in Freeport was built duty-free, regardless of whether duty was ultimately paid once construction was completed.
