Commonwealth Bank has donated $50,000 donation to the Bahamas Red Cross to assist with relief efforts on Family Islands impacted by Hurricane Joaquin.

"Like all Bahamians we were deeply moved by the devastation suffered by our brothers and sisters in the southern islands," said Commonwealth Bank President Ian Jennings. "Our focus and efforts now have to be on helping those persons rebuild their lives. In making this donation to the Bahamas Red Cross we seek to partner with an organization with the expertise in coordinating disaster relief efforts."

Jennings' comments came during a press conference at Red Cross headquarters in New Providence. In addition to the donation, Commonwealth Bank urged staff and the Bahamian public to partner in donating funds.

"We have seen in the last few days Bahamians helping Bahamians by donating food, clothing and water to various agencies and we are asking you to dig just a little deeper and make a donation no matter how small to The Hurricane Joaquin Relief Fund for the Bahamas Red Cross that the bank has set up," said Jennings. That account number is 7011033698.

"Every dollar that is donated will go directly to the Red Cross. Donations can be made at any Commonwealth Bank branch and we have placed ads with the account number and further information in the newspapers. Television and radio spots will begin running shortly."

The bank also asked that those who cannot make a monetary donation deliver donations of non-perishable goods to the Bahamas Red Cross on John F. Kennedy Drive between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

"We are happy to assist the Red Cross in its efforts to aid our fellow Bahamians in the hurricane-ravaged islands and we invite all Bahamians to join us in this effort," said Jennings.

With branches in New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco, Commonwealth Bank was for the second consecutive year the most successful bank in The Bahamas, sharing its profits with more than 6,500 shareholders. The bank has about 550 employees and assets of more than $1.5 billion.
