Glinton Released From Jail

Noted attorney Maurice Glinton, QC, was released from custody yesterday after spending four days in the lock-up of Cable Beach Police Station on a bench warrant. The Court of Appeal ordered Glinton's arrest on Friday, October 9, after he was not present for contempt of court proceedings scheduled for 10 a.m.

In a transcript of Friday's proceedings posted on the court's website, President Anita Allen said, "In the absence of his appearance in answer to the summons before the court this morning, we issue a warrant for his arrest to be brought before the next sitting of the court. That warrant will issue today."

Glinton appeared in court after the matter was adjourned and the arrest warrant issued but the matter was not revisited before the end of the court's day. Glinton was arrested and taken to Central Police Station after leaving the precincts of the court. He was later transferred to Cable Beach Police Station where he remained over the holiday weekend. Court of Appeal President Anita Allen scheduled Glinton's contempt hearing for October 19 when he appeared before the court on Tuesday. He is represented by attorneys Alfred Sears, QC, Wayne Munroe, QC, and Raynard Rigby.

Glinton was cited for contempt of court on September 28 after he refused to proceed with the case of three alleged drug traffickers who are fighting extradition to the United States and disrobed in the face of the court. Glinton suggested that Justice of Appeal Abdulai Conteh was disqualified from hearing the matter because he had reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 on August 5. The appeals of Glinton's former clients Trevor Roberts, Shanto Curry and Devroy Moss were heard Friday with the men relying on submissions that Glinton had filed before he withdrew from the case.
