Kenneth Vernon Perigord (aka Ken Perigord), a well known Bahamian businessman, died at 4:30 p.m. yesterday at his home after a battle with cancer, his family said. He was 68.

“Ken Perigord was a giant of a man, a patriot and a nation builder,” the family said in a statement.

Perigord grew up in Nassau, in the Valley, and was a diehard fan and supporter of the Valley Boys Junkanoo group.

The Ranfurly Homes for Children was also a major benefactor of his as he led annual fundraising initiatives for the organization. He also supported Bahamian athletics. Once an amateur athlete himself, he graciously sponsored many Bahamian athletes who have gone on to compete at the highest levels in the world.

At the height of his career, Perigord owned and operated three Shell service stations and was president of the Bahamas Petroleum Retailers Association. As president, he was a strong advocate for the local service station owners and ensured their fair treatment by the government as well as the international oil companies.

Perigord’s name later became synonymous with the Christmas season in The Bahamas as he, at one point, was the largest retailer of Christmas trees in the country.

During his retirement, he shared his passion for “golden oldies” music by hosting largely popular weekly radio shows on Power 104.5 FM, Love 97 FM and, later, Star 106.5 FM, a station he helped found.

He was a devout Anglican and a devoted father, his family said.
