EY announced yesterday that Serena Chan has been awarded this year’s EY Bahamas scholarship.

Chan, an accounting major at the University of Miami, is a graduate of St. Andrews School in New Providence.

The EY scholarship, valued up to $30,000 a year for a maximum of five years until the recipient has completed the minimum educational requirements to qualify as a CPA, is awarded annually to a student from each of EY’s Bahamas/Bermuda/BVI/Cayman Islands locations.

The scholarship program focuses on those studying accounting or another appropriate field who have demonstrated sustained academic excellence. It includes an eight- to ten-week summer internship to gain practical accounting experience, as well a full-time employment offer from EY upon completion of studies.

“When we evaluated this year’s candidates for the EY Bahamas scholarship, we looked for someone who personified the EY culture and our commitment to building a better working world,” said Michele Thompson, country managing partner, EY Bahamas.

“Serena has demonstrated an ideal balance of academic achievement and civic engagement. Her active participation in her community, along with top-notch grades, solidified her standing as this year’s top candidate.”

In addition to her academic achievements, Serena has studied dance since the age of three, both at Yodephy Dance and Modelling Academy and the National Dance School of The Bahamas. She has also participated in numerous community service events, including a beach clean-up program, food drives, bake sales and tutoring.

EY is a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services.
