A man was charged yesterday with kidnapping after he allegedly detained and beat another man over a missing gun. Tearge Fowler, 20, of Second Street, The Grove, appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney accused of the August 23 kidnapping of Alridge Sturrup. Prosecutors allege that Fowler and unnamed accomplices kidnapped Sturrup, threatened to kill him and beat him up.

Sturrup told police that he was detained in an abandoned building and his captors beat him up as they demanded he pay $1,200 in compensation for a missing gun. Fowler was not required to enter a plea to the kidnapping charge. He pleaded not guilty to charges of threats of death and causing harm.

McKinney denied Fowler bail because he does not have the jurisdiction to grant bail for kidnapping. Fowler makes his next court appearance on November 5. At that time, the matter is expected to be transferred to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment.
