A 24-year-old man was shot in his head and killed while he was sleeping at his friend's Jubilee Gardens home early yesterday morning, police said. The victim, identified by family as Omar Barton, was sleeping in the front room floor next to his girlfriend, when he was attacked around 3:30 a.m., according to police. Police said Barton's girlfriend woke up when she heard the shot but did not see the shooter. "When she got up, she realized that her boyfriend was shot," Chief Superintendent Clayton Fernander said. "The front door was open." However, he said there was no evidence that the locks had been tampered with.

Fernander said a young man was arrested in connection with the murder, but investigators had not determined the motive behind the murder. Fernander said the victim was known to the police for "major offenses as well as petty crimes". Barton's murder is the 99th for the year so far. This time last year there were 85 murders, according to The Nassau Guardian's records.

This latest incident comes two days after another man was murdered outside of a club on Minnie Street. The victim and another man were shot around 3 a.m. shortly after they exited the club. Fernander said when officers arrived on the scene, both men were lying in the street. The surviving victim was taken to hospital Fernander said he was in stable condition yesterday. Police have yet to determine a motive behind that shooting.
