No layoffs at Baha Mar

While Baha Mar Ltd. (BML) President Thomas M. Dunlap has laid out the work program of the 707 people at the resort who actually did any work last week, Baha Mar still maintains its full staff complement of more than 2,000, the vast majority of whom are simply collecting a paycheck. Paul Turnquest, director of public relations, pointed out that the other employees were not mentioned in the filing.

Dunlap's outline was contained in the BML weekly staff utilization summary report for August 21, 2015, itself part of his second supplemental declaration in support of BML's omnibus objection to motions filed by China Construction America Bahamas (CCA Bahamas) and the Export-Import Bank of China asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware to dismiss BML's Chapter 11 proceedings. Said Turnquest, "As outlined in Mr. Dunlap's weekly staff utilization summary, just over 700 employees were being utilized for the ramp down procedures to identify, count, archive and secure the resort's assets. This does not mean that only 700 employees remain employed at the resort. "This team, the bulk of which are security personnel, are completing an inventory of equipment/supplies and specifying location, quantities, serial numbers, etc., on all items."

While no concrete number has been given, Baha Mar continues to estimate its staff complement at around 2,400. The government has paid the salaries of the Bahamian workers since filing petitions in the Bahamas Supreme Court to wind up the Baha Mar companies, but what will happen going forward remains to be seen.
