Govt's 8.5m to fight crime

POLICE launched investigations into the first three murders of the year this weekend as Deputy Prime Minister Brent Symonette unveiled government plans to invest $8.5 million in the fight against crime over the next six months.

Mr Symonette told hundreds of officers gathered for the annual police church service at Christ Church Cathedral in George Street yesterday that crime had reached unacceptable levels in 2010, with the record murder count of 96 and an increase in gun and violent crime being the worst.
