Murder trial postponed

A murder trial was postponed yesterday because the defendant's lawyer is in another trial.

Attorney Ian Cargill could not begin the trial of Shakatoure Thompson, 26, of Yellow Elder Gardens, yesterday because he had empanelled a jury in another murder case on Monday.

Prosecutors say Thompson fatally shot Nadia Cartwright on August 11, 2013 and attempted to murder her boyfriend, Henry Burnside, during an armed robbery. Cartwright was riding pillion on Burnside's motorcycle on Baillou Hill Road when individuals in a gray Nissan Tiida pulled alongside them and fatally shot Cartwright in the head, according to police. Burnside was forced off the road and into a guardrail before one of the occupants of the car got out of the vehicle and made off with the motorcycle.

While requesting an adjournment, Cargill also notified the court that Burnside, the complainant, was one of his clients.

Acting Justice Gregory Hilton has set a fixture hearing for July 2.

Assistant Director of Prosecutions Sandra Dee Gardiner is the prosecutor.
